Lawrence House Museum

The Lawrence House
The Lawrence House is a provincial museum that houses artifacts and memorabilia about the W.D. Lawrence, the largest wooden ship ever built in Canada. The house features two large, formal Victorian parlours with original furnishings from the period, and many of the Lawrence family’s heirlooms. Open June 1 - October 4.
Historic BuildingsFifty-five historic buildings have been designated as Heritage Properties in Maitland. All are fine examples of 19th Century architectual styles. Unfortunately the publication, "Three Selfguided Walking Tours in Maitland" is out of print. A reference copy is available in Gallery 215.

Fundy Tidal and Interpretive Centre - South Maitland

The viewing platform built on the remains of the old railway bridge.
A wonderful location to wittness the "famous" tidal bore from the observation deck over the Shubenacadie River and to learn about the highest recorded tides in the world in the Interpretive Centre. Open May 15 - October 15
East Hants Historical Museum - Selma

The Selma Historic Museum
The museum is housed in a former church with an uniquely painted interior. It was built in the 1865. The East Hants Historical Society maintains an extensive geniology section and has a collection of shipbuilding and farming tools and many other artifacts from the area. It is open from June to September.

Christmas Festival

Home decorated for Christmas Festival
The Christmas Festival is held at the end of November every year to celebrate the season. Generous local residents open their doors to their Victorian era homes decorated for the season. 2012 will be the 18th year of Maitland's famous Christmas Festival.

Admiral Rock and Urbania: (along route 215 between South Maitland and Shubenacadie) A farming and forestry district.
South Maitland: (south of Maitland along route 215) Offers a fine view of the river, the red cliffs that border it, and the tidal bore. The tidal bore is a wall of white water that steadily advances along the muddy bottom of the Shubenacadie River and heralds an incoming high tide. Also boasts large deposits of gypsum.
